IET FURNITURE
SPACECRAFT worked with IET to clear 3 floors of furniture from their existing building – Michael Faraday House in preparation for refurbishment works.
THE AIM
The aim of our project was to remove all the furniture as sustainably as possible with minimal waste going to landfill.
REDUCE
IET were quick to reduce the amount of furniture that needed to be removed by firstly identifying pieces that could be used temporarily in their temporary office at Fujitsu. A number of items were also kept on site at Michael Faraday House to be used by the contractors for Wellfare whilst the refurbishment works were taking place.
REUSE
An inventory was put together of all the furniture which needed to be removed and issued to several organisations, many of whom were quick to respond with a wish list of furniture items they could use. On behalf of IET we were able to use the vehicles which would have been used to transport goods to recycling centres and redirect them to various sites; Davenant Foundation School, Woodford Green Athletics Club and Essex Ladies, St Thomas of Canterbury Church and Dbear – a new start up company.
RECYCLE
Once we had donated as much furniture as possible, we then reverted to recycling the items that were left. Woods and metals were separated and taken to recycling plants.
DAVENANT FOUNDATION SCHOOL
Davenant Foundation School is one of the many schools who are struggling with budget. Being able to accept good quality furniture in abundance was a real treat for not only the teaching staff but also the students.
IET’s repurposed canteen furniture was used as a temporary second breakout area for Sixth Formers and staff to use to enable adherence to Covid regulations.
The school library made excellent use of IET circular height adjustable tables and colourful seating.
IET executive desks now have been given a new lease of life for admin staff previously using school tables.
IET meeting chairs are now being used by very happy students.
IET furniture items such as trays and tray trollies were gratefully accepted by the canteen staff.
IET executive desks and a meeting table has been donated to the headteacher who had been working from a desk over 25yrs old.
Message from Mr Thorne – Headteacher
“I just want to pass on my sincere thank you for your kind donation of furniture to our school.
They are perfect for our lecture room, our SEN department and the library.
It makes such a difference, we would never be able to have furniture like this – we are very much stuck with our utilitarian standard school furniture. Thank you for brightening up our school, I have many happy children because of this injection of quality and exciting furniture.”
WOODFORD GREEN ATHLETICS CLUB
WGEL is an athletics club which relies heavily on coaches donating their time for free to help coach and inspire young athletes – currently coaching Daniel Rowden who will be representing GB in the now 2021 Olympics.
IET donated not only furniture but also monitors and flip charts to help display results after a meet. The furnaces and coffee cups (hundreds of them) were very well received.
Message from Cowsi Magol – Club President
“Thank you for taking time out and arranging delivery of the furniture to our club house.
On behalf of the club, could you please pass on my thanks to IET for donating the surplus furniture to the club. It will certainly be useful and will replace some of the old furniture we have. This is recycling at its best.”
ST THOMAS OF CANTERBURY
St Thomas were extremely grateful to receive 2 cupboards and approx. 40 stacking chairs to be used when hosting meetings with the congregation. Having had the expense of both roof works and the heating being upgraded this truly was a blessing for the church.
DBEAR
Dbear is a new start up business based in Amersham. With IET’s generous donation of desks and pedestals they were able to furnish their office, saving valuable resource when starting up a new business.
Message from Ryan Warner-McLouglin, Director
“Thank you so much for the 90 x desks and pedestals you let us have for our new start up business in Amersham.
As I am sure you are aware as a business the ultimate for of re-cycling is re-use, so by letting us re-use the furniture rather than have it re-cycled is brilliant for everyone’s green credentials.”
